In the years 7-6 BC the planets Jupiter and Saturn came together in the sky three times in a rare event called a Triple Conjunction. It was one of the signs in the Sun, Moon, and stars that alerted the Wise Men to the coming of Christ.
Jupiter and Saturn have long orbital periods, 12 and 29 years respectively, and Jupiter catches up with Saturn in an event called conjunction once every 19.86 years. In some years the planets join together when they are in an orbital position which makes them seem to be making a backward, or retrograde, motion. Once every seven cycles, or 139.03 years, the retrograde motion causes the planets to come together three times in a Triple Conjunction.
The symbolic meaning of the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter is not unlike the picture presented by the constellation Gemini. One star, Pollux, (“He who comes to suffer”) represents Jesus as the Suffering Savior who appeared when Pollux was at Zenith over Jerusalem. Similarly, the planet Jupiter with its great red spot, as if wounded in the side, symbolizes Jesus as the Suffering Savior. The other main star of Gemini, Castor (The Ruler), pictures the Second Coming of Jesus to rule and is a sign of His Second Coming when it moves into Zenith over Jerusalem in 2121 AD. Saturn, with its crown of rings, carriers the same meaning as The Ruler. When the two planets come together they send a message that the One who came to suffer will return to rule on Earth.
The Triple Conjunction of 7-6 BC occurred at during the time that the angel appeared to Zechariah in the Temple and John the Baptist was conceived. It was one of the signs which the Wise Men would have mentioned to Herod when they followed the Star of Bethlehem in 5 BC, and which caused Herod to order the killing of the Bethlehem Children under 2 years of age. The Triple Conjunction took place in Pisces, the sign of the Church, signifying that the Church Age was coming.
In the year 2100 there will be another Triple Conjunction, the time in the constellation Leo (The Lion), the sign of Judgement, signifying that the time for Christ’s Second Coming is near. It is a sign in the Sun, Moon, and Stars of the Second Coming of Christ.
Next week we have a preview of that Triple Conjunction as Saturn moves behind the Sun on January 13, to be lost in the light of the Sun along with Jupiter which moved behind the Sun on December 27, 2019. The grouping occurs while the Sun is in Sagittarius (The Archer), the sign of the Advent of Christ, revisiting the role of the 7-6 BC Triple Conjunction in the Advent. The two planets will come together in conjunction later this year during the Advent season, on December 21.
